Role transitions are frequent experiences in today’s dynamic economy. We’ve identified 12 counter-intuitive practices that people can use to avoid common pitfalls, scale early results, and tee-up future wins.
Strategically building and leveraging personal networks is one of the most important actions people can take during a transition into a new role.
Through our research in more than 300 organizations and hundreds of interviews, we identified what we called Fast Movers—employees at all levels who became much more connected in their organization than their similarly tenured peers. These newcomers were productive more quickly, more engaged and more likely to stay in the organization by doing three things:
- Initiating specific kinds of relationships critical to success. They jumpstarted productivity and inclusion by cultivating essential connections broadly and before they needed help from others.
- Engaging others. They energized people in your networks, which created “pull” to them and their ideas when engaging in new groups.
- Refining their networks. They recalibrated their networks and how they collaborated for long-term success.
At any given time, 30-40% of employees are in transition!
