At Patagonia, purpose leads rather than people and mission matters most of all. Our mission is simply: “save the planet” (something we aim to do by building the best products possible in ways that do as little harm to environment as possible and looking for ways to inspire other organizations to do the same). And as a certified “B Corporation” we also push ourselves to care radically for the people who live this mission out every day. Planet and people always precedes profits at Patagonia. Our approach to collaboration naturally flows from this missional focus, which provides both the “true north” for actions and the glue that binds teams together. Since purpose leads, not people, the primary role of “people leaders” becomes finding and attracting people who are already intensely passionate about this mission. Then leadership often means pointing people to the mission while stepping aside and finding a role to play alongside others in one of our many cross-functional, flat, and highly collaborative teams. Join us for a discussion of the ways collaboration can emerge out of company culture and – using Patagonia as a case study – ideas to further a culture of collaboration in your organization.
